About the Keyword Density
Keyword density is the percentage of times a keyword or phrase appears on a page compared to the total number of words. While keyword density is no longer a dominant ranking factor, it still matters as a signal of topical relevance and as a guardrail against keyword stuffing. This tool counts single words, two-word phrases, and three-word phrases, calculates their density, and flags potential over-optimization so you can keep your content natural and relevant.
How to use the Keyword Density Checker
- 1Paste your content into the text area. The tool works on plain text or HTML — it strips tags automatically before counting.
- 2Optionally enter a focus keyword in the field above the results to highlight its density and count at the top of the report.
- 3Review the single-word, two-word, and three-word phrase tables. Each shows the count, density percentage, and a warning if the density exceeds recommended thresholds.
- 4Check the Google ranking factors panel below the tables. It runs a quick on-page checklist against your content and flags items that need attention.
Best practices
- Aim for a keyword density of 1 to 2 percent for your primary keyword. Anything above 3 percent risks being flagged as keyword stuffing.
- Use related terms and synonyms instead of repeating the exact keyword. Google understands semantic relevance, so variations help more than repetition.
- Place your primary keyword in the title, first paragraph, and at least one heading. Position matters more than raw frequency.
- Write for humans first. If a sentence reads awkwardly because of a forced keyword, remove it — readability outranks density.
- Check two-word and three-word phrases to spot unintended repetition you may not notice when writing.
