How to use the Page Speed Checker
- 1Enter a full URL including https:// and click Analyze. The tool fetches the page and its resources.
- 2Review the estimated metrics: page weight, request count, and resource breakdown by type.
- 3Check the Core Web Vitals panel for estimated LCP, CLS, and INP scores with pass/warn/fail status.
- 4Read the recommendations list for specific fixes like compressing images, reducing JavaScript, or enabling caching.
Best practices
- Compress and serve images in WebP or AVIF format. Images are usually the largest resource on a page.
- Minify and defer JavaScript. Render-blocking JS delays First Contentful Paint and LCP.
- Use a CDN and set long cache headers for static assets. Repeat visits should load nearly instantly.
- Aim for an LCP under 2.5 seconds and a CLS under 0.1. These are the thresholds Google uses for the Page Experience signal.
- Limit third-party scripts. Each external script adds a request and can delay rendering.
