About the SERP Preview
The SERP Preview tool renders a pixel-accurate approximation of how your page title and meta description will display in Google search results. Because Google truncates titles around 600 pixels and descriptions around 960 pixels on desktop, writing meta tags blind is a recipe for cut-off snippets and lost clicks. This tool shows you exactly where the cut happens and warns you when your text is too long or too short to perform well.
How to use the SERP Preview tool
- 1Enter your page title in the Title field. The counter updates live and shows both the character count and the approximate pixel width Google will measure when it decides whether to truncate your title.
- 2Enter your meta description in the Description field. The same live counter applies, with a recommended limit of roughly 960 pixels on desktop and a narrower width on mobile.
- 3Toggle between Desktop and Mobile previews to see how the snippet changes across devices. Mobile previews use a narrower viewport and a slightly different line-height, which affects where text wraps.
- 4Watch the warning badges: green means you are within the recommended range, amber means the text is too short to make full use of the available space, and red means Google will likely truncate the text.
Best practices
- Keep titles between 50 and 60 characters to avoid truncation while using most of the available pixel width.
- Place your primary keyword near the beginning of the title — search engines give more weight to early words and users scan left to right.
- Write descriptions between 150 and 160 characters. Treat the description as ad copy that earns the click, not as a keyword stuffing zone.
- Do not duplicate the title in the description. Use the description to add a benefit or a call to action the title could not fit.
- Test both mobile and desktop previews. Mobile results show fewer characters per line, so a title that fits on desktop may still truncate on phones.
